8 Reasons to Use Homemade Cleaning Products

  4. Won’t trigger allergies and respiratory issues
  5. Better for air and water quality
  6. Use regular ingredients you already have in home
  7. Manufacturers do not have to disclose all ingredients so you may not know what you’re getting
  8. Generally produce same or similar results when used properly


Here are some of the top ingredients used in homemade solutions. How many of these do you already have in your pantry?


Baking Soda

Replace: Scouring powder

Will: Deodorize; clean; scour; remove dirt and stains

Use on: Sinks, toilets, baths, ovens, fridges, surfaces

Castille Soap

Replace: All-purpose cleaner

Use as: laundry detergent, dish soap, hand soap, floor cleaner, shampoo

White Vinegar

Replace: All-purpose cleaner

Will: Remove stains, grease, dirt, odors, mold and mildew

Lemon Juice

Replace: Stain remover

Will: Fight as anti-bacterial; remove stains; whiten

Olive Oil

Replace: Furniture polish

Will: polish furniture; loosen stains, grease and grime

Essential Oils

Will: Fight as anti-bacterial; sanitizer; deodorizer


Will: Scour dirt; Boost cleaning effects (especially with vinegar and baking soda)

Soap Nuts

Replace: Laundry detergent

Will: Remove grime and smells; anti-fungal; anti-bacterial; anti-microbial


Here are some great homemade recipes to try. Let us know if you have any favorites you use in your home.


All-Purpose Cleaner

1 part White Vinegar

1 part Water

~10 drops Essential Oil OR infuse vinegar with rinds of lemons or oranges (add citrus rinds to jar, cover with vinegar, seal and store in cabinet for 2-4 weeks. Strain and use alongside normal vinegar) Don’t use on marble, stone or granite surfaces


Glass Cleaner

Mix 1 part Rubbing Alcohol with 1 part Vinegar and 2 parts Water


Toilet Cleaner

Pour in White Vinegar. Add a good shake of Baking Soda with about 10 drops of Essential Oil.

Let sit for a few minutes and then scrub the bowl with brush. 


Laundry Detergent

Soapnuts (Add to wash in a pouch or grind to make liquid detergent by boiling in water)


Mold and Mildew

Fill bottle with White Vinegar (can add tea tree oil also). Spray on affected area and let sit for 30 minutes. Rinse with warm water.


Fresh Lemon Degreaser (All Purpose except for wood)

2 cups of water

2 Tablespoons of freshly squeezed lemon juice

½ teaspoon Dr. Bronner’s Castille Soap

1 Tablespoon of baking soda

Mix all ingredients in 24 ounce spray bottle. Spritz onto surface and wipe with a microfiber cloth
